Family builds thriving business on peanuts Picosos Peanut growing in competitive industry Tricia Owen
When Jimmie Gennero retired from the Army two decades ago, he wasn’t content to take a job somewhere working for peanuts. So he decided to get into the business of selling them.
Since then, the venture, Picosos Peanut Co. Inc., located at 18620 Bandera Road in Helotes, has grown into a healthy family business.
Gennero originally purchased the peanut business from relatives in 1977. Before long, Gennero’s children — two sons and two daughters — also were involved in the business, which manufactures and distributes peanut products.
“My sister and I started immediately with my father,” says Sylvana Mery-Gennero, Jimmie Gennero’s daughter and the general manager of the company. “Then when my first brother graduated from high school (Gino Gennero), he came, and then the baby of the family (James Dino Gennero) joined after he finished high school.” Now, the children are involved in all aspects of operating the business.
